The release of the lightweight window manager IceWM 4.0.0 is now available. IceWM offers complete management through keyboard shortcuts, the ability to use virtual desktops, taskbars, and application menus, with tab grouping for windows. The window manager is configured through a fairly simple configuration file, and theme customization is possible. Tabbed window grouping is supported. Built-in applets for monitoring CPU, memory, and traffic are available. Several third-party GUIs for configuration, desktop implementation, and menu editors are also being developed. The code is written in C++ and distributed under the GPLv2 license.
The significant version number change is a natural continuation of the version numbering used in the project (after the release of 3.9, version 4.0 was formed). The new version features an improved quick-switch interface between windows using Alt+Tab, which can now handle a large number of windows in both horizontal and vertical modes. After activating the Alt+Tab interface, new capabilities include pressing the first letter of an application's class name to jump to the next window of that class, using number keys or mouse clicks to select an application, navigating between windows with arrow keys, and pressing the 'menu' button to open the system menu.
In the new version, transparency overlay (alphaBlending=true) and 32-bit RGBA are enabled by default. A QuickSwitchPreview setting has been added, which displays application thumbnails in the window-switching interface. The DoubleBuffer setting has been removed. Icon sizes have been standardized (16, 22, 24, 32, 48, 64, 128, 256). Icon rendering has been accelerated through caching. The size of text in the window template is limited to 128 bytes. The icesh utility now includes the options getWorkspaceName and getWorkspaceNames.
