The distribution is based on the codebase of the Illumos project, which in turn continues the development of OpenSolaris in the areas of kernel, network stack, file systems, drivers, and other operating system components.
The distribution can be used as a general-purpose OS, as well as for building highly scalable storage systems.
The system has full support for KVM and Bhyve hypervisors, Crossbow virtual network stack, and the ZFS file system.
New features include significant improvements in SMB/CIFS support in the kernel (many smb3 extensions have been implemented), ZFS now supports storing data and metadata in encrypted form, LX zones now support new Linux distributions, support for pluggable TCP congestion control algorithms has been added, performance optimization has been conducted for the Bhyve hypervisor, and NVME device emulation support has been added.
