Release of OpenIPC 2.1, an alternative firmware for surveillance cameras

The release of the Linux distribution OpenIPC 2.1 has been published, designed for use in surveillance cameras instead of the stock firmware, most of which stop receiving updates from manufacturers over time. The release is positioned as experimental and, unlike the stable branch, is built not on the OpenWRT package base, but using buildroot. The project's developments are distributed under the MIT license. Firmware images have been prepared for IP cameras based on Hisilicon Hi35xx, SigmaStar SSC335, XiongmaiTech XM510, and XM530 chips.

The proposed firmware offers features such as support for hardware motion detectors, a proprietary implementation of the RTSP protocol for streaming video from a single camera to more than 10 clients simultaneously, the possibility of utilizing hardware support for h264/h265 codecs, audio support with a sampling rate of up to 96kHz, the ability to transcode JPEG images on the fly for progressive scanning, and support for Adobe DNG RAW format, which addresses computational photography tasks.

The main differences between the new version and the previous release based on OpenWRT are:

  • In addition to the HiSilicon SoC, which is used in 60% of the Chinese cameras available in the domestic market, support for cameras based on SigmaStar and Xiongmai chips has been announced.
  • HLS (HTTP Live Streaming) protocol support has been added, which allows video streaming from the camera to a browser without using an intermediary. server.
  • The OSD interface (on-screen display) now supports Unicode character output, including displaying data in Russian.
  • Support for the NETIP (DVRIP) protocol has been added, developed for managing Chinese cameras. This protocol can be used to update the cameras.
