Release of the open platform .NET 6

Microsoft has introduced a significant new release of the open platform .NET 6, created by unifying the .NET Framework, .NET Core, and Mono products. .NET 6 allows for the development of cross-platform applications for browsers, cloud systems, desktops, IoT devices, and mobile platforms, utilizing unified libraries and a common build process that is independent of the application type. The .NET SDK 6, .NET Runtime 6, and ASP.NET Core Runtime 6 builds are available for Linux, macOS, and Windows. The .NET Desktop Runtime 6 is provided exclusively for Windows. Project-related developments are distributed under the MIT license.

.NET 6 includes the CoreCLR runtime with the RyuJIT just-in-time compiler, standard libraries, CoreFX libraries, WPF, Windows Forms, WinUI, Entity Framework, the dotnet command-line interface, as well as tools for developing microservices, libraries, server-side, graphical, and console applications. The ASP.NET Core 6.0 web application development stack and the Entity Framework Core 6.0 ORM layer (including drivers for SQLite and PostgreSQL) are published separately, along with releases for C# 10 and F# 6 languages. Support for .NET 6.0 and C# 10 is included in the free code editor Visual Studio Code.

Features of the new release:

  • Performance has been significantly improved, including optimization of file input/output.
  • C# 10 introduces support for structs in the form of records (record struct), the 'global using' directive, file-scoped namespaces, and new opportunities for lambda expressions. The compiler has added support for incremental source code generation.
  • F# 6 includes support for the async task execution model and pipeline debugging.
  • The Hot Reload feature is available, providing tools for on-the-fly code editing during program execution, allowing changes to be made without manually stopping execution or attaching breakpoints. Developers can run applications under 'dotnet watch', after which code changes are automatically applied to the running application, enabling immediate observation of results.
  • The 'dotnet monitor' utility has been added for accessing diagnostic information from the dotnet process.
  • A new dynamic optimization system based on profiling results (PGO — Profile-guided optimization) has been proposed, allowing for the generation of more optimized code based on execution characteristics analysis. The use of PGO has improved the performance of the TechEmpower JSON "MVC" benchmark by 26%.
  • Support for the HTTP/3 protocol has been added to HttpClient and gRPC in ASP.NET Core.
  • The API related to the JSON format has been expanded. A new code generator, System.Text.Json, and a data serialization system in JSON format have been added.
  • In Blazor, the platform for building web applications using C#, support has been added for rendering Razor components from JavaScript and integration with existing JavaScript applications.
  • Support for compiling .NET code to WebAssembly has been added.
  • Support for symbolic links has been added to the File IO API. FileStream has been completely rewritten.
  • Support for OpenSSL 3 and the ChaCha20/Poly1305 cryptographic algorithms has been added.
  • The Runtime now implements W^X (Write XOR Execute) protection mechanisms, which prevent simultaneous write and execute access, and CET (Control-flow Enforcement Technology) to protect against exploits leveraging return-oriented programming techniques.
  • Experimental support for iOS and Android as Target Framework Moniker (TFM) platforms has been added.
  • Support for Arm64 systems has been significantly improved. Support for Apple devices powered by the M1 ARM chip (Apple Silicon) has been added.
  • A build process for the .NET SDK from source code has been provided, simplifying the creation of .NET packages for Linux distributions.
