After two years of development, the new version RetroShare 0.6.6 is now available. It is a platform for secure file and message exchange via an encrypted Friend-to-Friend network. In this type of peer-to-peer network, users establish direct connections only with peers they trust. Builds are prepared for Windows, FreeBSD, and many GNU/Linux distributions. The source code of RetroShare is written in C++ using the Qt toolkit and is distributed under the AGPLv3 license.
In addition to direct messaging, the program provides tools for multi-person chat, organizing voice and video calls, sending encrypted emails to network users, facilitating file exchanges with selected users or any participant in the network (using technology similar to BitTorrent), creating decentralized forums resistant to censorship, supporting offline message posting, and forming channels for subscription-based content delivery.
In the new release:
- The interface for handling messages has been redesigned, and new layouts have been added for channels and forums (board). Two display modes for publications have been proposed — stack and list:
- The token system used for connecting to other users has been revamped. Identifiers have become significantly shorter and now fit within the size of a QR code, simplifying the sharing of identifiers with other users. The identifier encompasses the names of nodes and profiles. SSL Id, a hash snapshot of the profile, and information about IP addresses for connections.
- Compatibility with the third version of the Tor onion services protocol has been ensured.
- Tools have been added for automatically deleting channels and forums 60 days after unsubscribing.
- The notification system has been revamped, with the 'Log' tab replaced by 'Activity', which contains summary data on new messages and connection attempts, as well as information on connection requests, invites, and changes in the moderator team.
- Various improvements have been made to the interface, such as the addition of a new tab for identifiers, enhanced homepage readability, and a redesign of the topic pinning feature in the forum.
- When generating a digital signature for certificates, the SHA256 algorithm is used instead of SHA1. The old asynchronous token system has been replaced with a new API that operates in blocking mode.
- Instead of the console server retroshare-nogui has been replaced with the retrofit-service, which can be used on server systems without a monitor as well as on devices running the Android platform.
- The license has been changed from GPLv2 to AGPLv3 for GUI and LGPLv3 for libretroshare.
