Release of the drawing program MyPaint 2.0.0

After four years of development published the new version of the specialized program for digital painting using a tablet or mouse — MyPaint 2.0.0. The program is distributed under the GPLv2 license, developed in Python and C++ using the GTK3 toolkit. Ready builds are created for Linux (AppImage, Flatpak), Windows, and macOS.

MyPaint can be used by artists engaged in digital painting and can, in some applications, compete with well-known proprietary drawing programs Corel Painter and Artrage. The program features a simple, user-friendly interface and is not positioned as an image editing tool. MyPaint has a large set of brushes that effectively simulate real artistic tools, such as pencils, oil paints, watercolors, palette knives, and more. One interesting feature of the program is its infinite canvas that can be scrolled and zoomed.

Key improvements:

  • By default, it uses linear compositing and spectral blending (pigment mode), which is well-suited for creating works that imitate traditional materials and tools.

Since the new methods have their drawbacks, such as decreased performance, complicated layer merging, and portability issues, a compatibility mode with MyPaint 1.x is available in the settings and file open dialog. When this mode is selected, spectral blending is disabled and normal layers, rather than pigmented ones, are applied by default, allowing the opening of files created in earlier versions that look different in MyPaint 2.

  • Rotating and zooming the canvas now affects the shape of brush strokes. The new behavior during stroking resembles the action of rotating the paper before the artist (previously, stroking was done as if the artist was turning with the sheet). Similarly, changes in zoom level affect stroke parameters, as if the paper in front of the artist has increased in size.

  • A plethora of new brush parameters has been introduced (offset, advanced smudging options, posterization (izogeliya), pigment) and input characteristics of brushes (attack angle, base radius, zoom level, etc.).
  • Additional symmetrical drawing modes have been introduced: vertical, vertical + horizontal, rotational, and snowflake.
  • The fill tool has been improved, with added offset fill, blur, and gap detection features.

  • Full support for Python3 has been provided, and the transition to using the PyGI (PyGObject) library instead of PyGTK has been made.
