Valve has released the Proton 10.0-4 project, built on the Wine codebase and aimed at enabling the launch of Linux gaming applications designed for Windows and featured in the Steam catalog. The project's developments are distributed under the BSD license.
Proton allows direct launching of gaming applications provided only for Windows in the Linux Steam client. The package includes implementations of DirectX 8/9/10/11 (based on the DXVK package) and DirectX 12 (based on vkd3d-proton), functioning through the translation of DirectX calls to the Vulkan API. It offers improved controller support and the ability to use full-screen mode regardless of the resolutions supported by the games. To enhance the performance of multi-threaded games, it supports mechanisms such as 'esync' (Eventfd Synchronization) and 'futex/fsync'.
Changes in the new version of Proton include:
- The VKD3D-Proton 3.0b version has been updated, a fork from the vkd3d package created by Valve to enhance Direct3D 12 support in Proton. The vkd3d package has been updated to version 1.18.
- Support for Steamworks SDK 1.63 has been added.
- The Wine Mono engine with .NET implementation has been updated to release 10.4.1.
- Tactile feedback in DualSense controllers has been improved.
