The release of Proxmox Virtual Environment 6.4 has been published, a specialized Linux distribution based on Debian GNU/Linux aimed at deploying and managing virtual servers using LXC and KVM, and capable of serving as an alternative to products like VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, and Citrix Hypervisor. The size of the installation ISO image is 928 MB.
Proxmox VE provides tools for deploying a fully functional industrial-grade virtual server system, managed through a web interface designed for handling hundreds or even thousands of virtual machines. The distribution includes built-in tools for organizing backups of virtual environments and offers out-of-the-box clustering support, including the ability to migrate virtual environments from one node to another without downtime. Features of the web interface include: support for secure VNC console; role-based access management to all available objects (VM, storage, nodes, etc.); and support for various authentication mechanisms (MS ADS, LDAP, Linux PAM, Proxmox VE authentication).
In the new release:
- Synchronization with the Debian 10.9 'Buster' package base has been accomplished. Updated Linux kernel to 5.4 (optionally 5.11), LXC 4.0, QEMU 5.12, OpenZFS 2.0.4.
- Added the ability to use unified backups stored in a single file for restoration of virtual machines and containers hosted on the Proxmox Backup Server. A new utility, proxmox-file-restore, has been added.
- A live mode has been added for restoring virtual machine backups stored on server Proxmox Backup Server (allows activating the VM before the restoration is completed, which continues in the background).
- Improved integration with the Ceph PG (placement group) automatic scaling mechanism. Support has been implemented for Ceph storage versions Octopus 15.2.11 and Nautilus 14.2.20.
- The ability to attach a virtual machine to a specific version of QEMU has been added.
- Improved support for cgroup v2 for containers.
- Container templates based on Alpine Linux 3.13, Devuan 3, Fedora 34, and Ubuntu 21.04 have been added.
- The ability to store monitoring metrics in InfluxDB 1.8 and 2.0 using the HTTP API has been added.
- In the distribution installer, ZFS partition configuration has been improved for legacy hardware without UEFI support.
- Notifications about the availability of CephFS, CIFS, and NFS for backup storage have been added.
