Release of Proxmox VE 7.1, a distribution for organizing the operation of virtual servers.

The release of Proxmox Virtual Environment 7.1 has been published, a specialized Linux distribution based on Debian GNU/Linux, aimed at deploying and managing virtual servers using LXC and KVM, serving as a replacement for products like VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, and Citrix Hypervisor. The size of the installation ISO image is 1 GB.

Proxmox VE provides tools for deploying a fully functional industrial-grade virtual server system, managed through a web interface designed for handling hundreds or even thousands of virtual machines. The distribution includes built-in tools for organizing backups of virtual environments and offers out-of-the-box clustering support, including the ability to migrate virtual environments from one node to another without downtime. Features of the web interface include: support for secure VNC console; role-based access management to all available objects (VM, storage, nodes, etc.); and support for various authentication mechanisms (MS ADS, LDAP, Linux PAM, Proxmox VE authentication).

In the new release:

  • Synchronized with the Debian 11.1 package base. Transitioned to Linux kernel 5.13. Updated LXC 4.0, Ceph 16.2.6, QEMU 6.1, and OpenZFS 2.1.
  • The web interface now allows setting the retention period for backups.
  • Extended options have been added for defining backup creation times. A separate backup scheduling process, pvescheduler, has been added to support flexible backup operation start rules.
  • The ability to tag backups to protect them from deletion or manual removal has been provided (deletion will be blocked until the tag is removed).
  • Support for TPM 2.0 (Trusted Platform Module) has been added in any virtual machines, allowing the installation and execution of guest systems with Windows 11. UEFI Secure Boot support has been added to the QEMU package.
  • Support for Fedora 35, Ubuntu 21.10, AlmaLinux, and Rocky Linux has been implemented in containers, including the necessary templates for installing these distributions.
  • The ability to compress container images using the Zstandard (Zstd) algorithm has been added.
  • For unprivileged containers created through the web interface, nested launching support is now enabled by default for better compatibility with the latest versions of systemd in new templates.
  • Two-factor authentication support has been improved — multiple additional factors can now be configured for a single account. Support for WebAuthn and one-time recovery keys has been added.
  • The creation of guest environments with multiple disks has been simplified. Additional disks can now be added through the virtual machine creation wizard.
  • The ability to switch SCSI and Virtio disks to read-only mode in a virtual machine has been provided.
  • The ability to run multiple instances of CephFS and configure external Ceph clusters via API has been added.
  • The creation wizard has been updated of virtual machines with presets for installing Windows 11 (q35, OVMF, TPM).
