Scala is a relatively complex language, but this complexity enables high performance and unconventional solutions at the intersection of functional and object-oriented programming. Two major web frameworks, Play and Lift, have been created using it. Play powers platforms like Coursera and Gilt.
Apache projects, such as Apache Spark, Apache Ignite (the free version of GridGain's main product), and Apache Kafka are primarily written in Scala. The compilers and libraries of Scala are distributed under the BSD (Berkeley Software Distribution) license.
In the RedMonk Programming Language popularity ranking for 2019, Scala ranks 13th, surpassing Go, Haskell, and Kotlin.
