A stable release of the interface for simplifying network settings configuration is available — NetworkManager 1.42.0. Plugins for VPN support (Libreswan, OpenConnect, Openswan, SSTP, etc.) are being developed within their own development cycles.
Key innovations in NetworkManager 1.42:
- The command-line interface nmcli now supports setting the authentication method based on the IEEE 802.1X standard, which is widely used for securing corporate wireless networks and organizing authenticated access to switch ports in wired networks.
- It is now possible to change loopback interface parameters and attach a connection profile to it, which allows, for example, binding an additional IP address to the loopback interface.
- Support for ECMP (Equal-cost multi-path) routing has been added, allowing the modification of weights for routes and management of flows in multipath routing, where packets can be delivered via multiple routes through different network interfaces tied to different IP addresses.
- In the DNS-over-TLS server settings, it is now allowed to specify a hostname, not just an IP address.
- It is possible to use the headers of the 802.1ad protocol (VLAN stacking or QinQ) for VLAN tagging, which, unlike the 802.1Q protocol, allows nested headers and the substitution of multiple VLAN tags in a single Ethernet frame.
- Support for load balancing through aggregated Ethernet interfaces linked to the source (source load balancing) has been added.
- For IP tunnels, VTI protocol support has been implemented.
- Support for the WEP protocol has been removed from the nmtui utility.
