Almost three years after the launch of the previous significant branch, Apple released an open printing system (Common Unix Printing System), used in macOS and most Linux distributions. Development of CUPS is fully controlled by Apple, which in 2007 acquired Easy Software Products, the creator of CUPS.
Starting with this release, the code license has changed from GPLv2 and LGPLv2 to Apache 2.0, allowing third-party companies to use the CUPS code in their products without the need to disclose changes, and also providing licensing compatibility with other open Apple projects like Swift, WebKit, and mDNSResponder. The Apache 2.0 license also specifically defines the transfer of patent rights along with the code. A negative consequence of changing the license from GPL to Apache is the loss of licensing compatibility with projects distributed only under the GPLv2 license (Apache 2.0 is compatible with GPLv3 but incompatible with GPLv2). To address this issue, a special exception has been added to the licensing agreement for code under GPLv2/LGPLv2 licenses.
