Release of Virtualization System VirtualBox 6.1

After a year of development, Oracle released has released the virtualization system VirtualBox 6.1. Ready-to-use installation packages are for Linux (Ubuntu, Fedora, openSUSE, Debian, SLES, RHEL in AMD64 architecture builds), Solaris, macOS, and Windows.

Key changes:

  • Support has been added for the hardware mechanisms introduced in the fifth generation Intel Core i processors (Broadwell) for nested virtualization of virtual machines;
  • The old method for supporting 3D graphics based on the VBoxVGA driver has been removed. For 3D, it is recommended to use the new VBoxSVGA and VMSVGA drivers;
  • The VBoxSVGA and VMSVGA drivers now support YUV2 and texture formats using this color model when using OpenGL on the host side (on macOS and Linux), which allows for video rendering acceleration by offloading color space conversion operations to the GPU when 3D is enabled. Issues with compressed textures in OpenGL when using 3D mode with the VMSVGA driver have been resolved;
  • A software on-screen keyboard with multimedia keys support has been added, which can be used as a keyboard in guest OS;
  • The vboximg-mount module with experimental support for direct access to NTFS, FAT, and ext2/3/4 file systems within disk images has been added, implemented on the guest system side and does not require host-side support for these file systems. Currently, functionality is limited to read-only mode;
  • Experimental support for virtio-scsi has been added for both hard disks and optical drives, including the ability to boot from virtio-scsi devices;
  • An option has been added to export virtual machines to cloud environments using paravirtualization mechanisms;
  • Support for the recompiler has been discontinued; hardware virtualization support in the CPU is now mandatory to run virtual machines;
  • The graphical interface has improved the creation of virtual machine images (VISO) and expanded the capabilities of the built-in file manager;
  • A built-in VM attributes editor has been added to the virtual machine information panel, allowing changes to certain settings without opening the configurator;
  • Configuration of storage options for VM has been made more convenient, providing support for changing the controller bus type and the ability to move attached elements between controllers using a drag-and-drop interface;
  • The session information dialog has been expanded and improved;
  • The media selection dialog has been optimized to display a list of known images as well as allow the selection of a custom file;
  • The interface for configuring storage and networking subsystems has been optimized;
  • A CPU load indicator has been added to the status bar in the virtual machine;
  • The media enumeration code has been optimized to run faster and with less CPU load in scenarios with a large number of registered media. The function for adding existing or new media has been restored in the Virtual Media Manager;
  • The VirtualBox Manager now better displays the list of virtual machines, with groups of virtual machines more prominently highlighted, improved VM search, and fixed the tools section position while scrolling through the VM list;
  • Support for importing virtual machines from Oracle Cloud Infrastructure has been introduced. Functions for exporting virtual machines to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure have been expanded, including the ability to create multiple virtual machines without rebooting them. The option to bind custom tags to cloud images has been added;
  • The input system has been updated to support horizontal mouse scrolling using the IntelliMouse Explorer protocol;
  • The runtime has been adapted for operation on hosts with a large number of CPUs (up to 1024);
  • The ability to change the host-side audio backend while the VM is in a saved state has been added;
  • VBoxManager now supports moving multiple source files/directories of the guest system to the target directory;
  • Support for Linux kernel 5.4 has been added. During kernel build, digital signature generation for modules is disabled (signatures can be added by the user after the build completes). The function for PCI device passthrough in Linux has been removed, as the current code is incomplete and not suitable for use;
  • The EFI implementation has been updated to a newer firmware code, and NVRAM support has been added. Boot support has been added for
    APFS and the ability to use custom paths to boot devices with SATA and NVMe interfaces created in macOS;
  • A new type of network adapter, PCnet-ISA, has been added (currently available only from CLI);
  • Improved implementation of the USB EHCI controller. Added the ability to filter USB devices by connection port.
