The release of the T2 SDE 24.6 meta-distribution has been published, providing an environment for creating custom distributions, cross-compiling, and keeping package versions up to date. The platform initially focuses on building assemblies based on the Linux kernel, but prototypes are being developed to build packages for various operating systems, including macOS, Haiku, and BSD systems. Future plans include supporting the creation of environments based on other kernels, such as those based on L4, Fuchsia, and RedoxOS, and the ability to build assemblies based on Android (AOSP). Among popular distributions built on the T2 system, Puppy Linux can be noted. The project provides basic bootable ISO images with a minimal graphical environment in versions with Musl, uClibc, and Glibc libraries. More than 5,000 packages are available for building.
T2 supports 25 hardware architectures: Alpha, Arc, ARM(64), Avr32, HPPA(64), IA64, Loongarch64, M68k, Microblaze, MIPS(64), Nios2, OpenRISC, PowerPC(64), RISCV(64), s390x, SPARC(64), SuperH, i486, i686, x86-64, and x32. The platform supports both the latest embedded systems and older hardware, such as continued support for the Sony PS3 console and SGI, Sun, and HP workstations. For some architectures, the environment can run with 512 MB of RAM. Ready-made assemblies with a graphical environment based on GNOME and Wayland have been created for the x86_64, i686, ARM64, PPC64, IA-64, and RISCV-64 architectures.
Among the changes in the new version:
- 80 packages added, 750 packages updated, 21 packages removed.
- The base package includes LibreOffice, Wine, and Thunderbird.
- The Linux kernel 6.9, LVM/Clang 18.1.6, GCC 13.3.0, Mesa 24.1, Firefox 126, KDE 6, and GNOME 46 have been updated to the latest releases.
- Utilities for manipulating the intermediate representation of SPIR-V shaders used in Vulkan are included.
- Performance optimizations for OpenSSL have doubled the speed of many cryptographic algorithms and SSH on IA-64 (Itanium) architecture systems.
- Support for installation into the remaining free disk space on the storage device has been added.
- Minimal mode installation has been established, and an option for minimal installation without X.Org components has been added.
- Built-in network configuration for connecting to wireless networks using WPA has been added.
- The number of default installable icons and wallpapers has been expanded. Support for SVG format has been added.
