Canonical has released the first corrective update of the Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS distribution, which includes updates for several hundred packages addressing vulnerabilities and stability issues. The new version also fixes bugs in the installer and bootloader. The release of Ubuntu 24.04.1 marks the completion of the basic stabilization of the LTS release — users of the previous LTS branch, Ubuntu 22.04, will now be offered an upgrade to the 24.04 branch.
At the same time, similar updates for Ubuntu Budgie 24.04.1 LTS, Kubuntu 24.04.1 LTS, Ubuntu MATE 24.04.1 LTS, Ubuntu Studio 24.04.1 LTS, Lubuntu 24.04.1 LTS, Ubuntu Kylin 24.04.1 LTS, and Xubuntu 24.04.1 LTS have been introduced. It's only reasonable to use the provided builds for new installations — previously installed configurations of Ubuntu 24.04 will receive all changes present in Ubuntu 24.04.1 through the standard update installation system. Support for updates and security problem fixes for the server and desktop editions of Ubuntu 24.04 LTS will last until April 2029 (plus an additional 7 years for users of the Ubuntu Pro service).
Among the changes in the new release, we can note the updates to the latest corrective versions of packages GNOME (46.2), Mesa (24.0.9), nvidia-graphics-drivers, xdg-desktop-portal-gnome, ovn (24.03.2), snapd (2.63.1), and apparmor. The livecd-rootfs package has added the ubuntu-core-installer project and provided experimental support for building ubuntu-core-desktop installation images. Support for DCN 3.5 (Display Core Next) for AMD GPUs has been implemented in the linux-firmware package. The support for the RISC-V platform has been improved, and support for StarFive VisionFive 2 and Allwinner Nezha boards has been added. New Broadcom chip IDs have been introduced. The issue with network booting of the Ubuntu Desktop installer has been resolved.
The integration of the new kernel version, drivers, and graphical stack components is expected in the upcoming Ubuntu 24.04.2 release scheduled for February, as these components will be imported from the Ubuntu 24.10 release, which will only be ready in the fall and will require additional time for testing.
