After six months of development, the release of the open-source video player MPV 0.40 has been finalized, branching off from the codebase of the MPlayer2 project in 2013. MPV focuses on developing new features without worrying about maintaining compatibility with MPlayer. The MPV code is distributed under the LGPLv2.1+ license, with some parts still under GPLv2, but the process of transitioning to LGPL is nearly complete, and the option "--enable-lgpl" can be used to disable remaining GPL code.
Among the changes in the new version:
- On the Linux platform, support for High Dynamic Range (HDR) has been implemented with DRM (Direct Rendering Manager) or dmabuf-wayland.
- The console has seen improvements in visual style and input autocompletion functionality.
- A new item selection menu has been added to the built-in OSC (On Screen Controller) interface, which appears when right-clicking.
- For scripts, a clipboard property has been added, granting access to the clipboard.
- A new menu for quick access to common actions has been added.
- Support for navigation through playback history, edits, and materials recorded on DVD/Blu-Ray has been added to the select.lua script.
- Blu-ray, DVD, and CDDA streaming has been enhanced.
- Track selection and metadata display have been improved.
- Profiles osd-box, sub-box, and box have been added to simplify the inclusion of styled versions of the on-screen interface (OSD/OSC).
- Support for the Windows platform has been added to the umpv script, used for engaging an already running instance of mpv.
