The Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media (Roskomnadzor) has sent requests to the owners of ten VPN services demanding they connect to the Federal State Information System (FGIS).
In accordance with the laws currently in effect in Russia, VPN services (as well as anonymizers and search engine operators) are required to restrict access to internet resources banned in our country. For this, the owners of VPN systems must connect to the FGIS, which contains a list of forbidden websites. However, not all services comply with these requirements.
Reportedly, notifications regarding the need to connect to the FGIS have been sent to NordVPN, Hide My Ass!, Hola VPN, Openvpn, VyprVPN, ExpressVPN, TorGuard, IPVanish, Kaspersky Secure Connection, and VPN Unlimited.
VPN services have 30 days to comply with these requirements. "In the event of non-compliance with the obligations stipulated by law, Roskomnadzor may decide to restrict access to the VPN service," the Russian agency stated.
In other words, if the listed services do not connect to the FGIS within the specified time, they may be blocked.
Additionally, it should be noted that currently the search engine operators Yandex, Sputnik, Mail.ru, and Rambler are connected to the FGIS. Requirements for VPN services and anonymizers to connect to this system have not been previously issued.
