On the morning of January 24, Russians began to widely report problems with the functioning of services that allowed them to bypass mobile internet blocks. As explained the resource "Koda Durova," a number of VPN services suddenly lost access to many servers that were used to bypass mobile internet restrictions in Russian regions.
According to "Koda Durova," several VPN services successfully bypassed the restrictions of the "white lists" by using Russian servers with "white" IP addresses, which were also used by services in the "white list." The latter, we remind you, maintain functionality even when restrictions are imposed on mobile internet and most websites stop opening.
To operate such bypass services, developers use, among other things, cascading chains of Russian servers that mask traffic as legitimate resources from the "white list." According to "Koda Durova," Roskomnadzor demanded that cloud providers exclude the overlap of IP address pools used for the resources in the "white list" with the pools used by other clients.
Apparently, this explains the failure of VPN services on January 24, as they lost access to many servers with such IP addresses. However, it should be noted that the list of VPN services blocked by Roskomnadzor is constantly expanding, and by mid-January it included 439 names.
It should also be noted that on January 24 a large-scale failure of the Russian internet itself was recorded. According to "Kommersant," complaints were received from users about issues with MTS, MegaFon, and T2. Problems were observed in the operation of both mobile and home internet. The service "Sboi.rf" recorded numerous complaints about access issues to Telegram and WhatsApp.
The CEO of TelecomDaily, Denis Kuskov, expressed the opinion that glitches have become too frequent, and the issue likely does not lie with the operators. "There has never been this many incidents in such a short period before. Technical failures happen with all market players, and when it occurs locally with one company, it is somewhat understandable. However, when such global problems arise, they could be due to actions from Roskomnadzor, which has its own equipment on the operators' networks, or it could be a large-scale failure caused from outside. The agency claims that everything being done is just some local problems related to software mismatches and the loss of some coordination. What, how, and when Roskomnadzor does things, operators might not know at all. Moreover, we ourselves do not know. Whether or not to speak about this openly is already the agency's decision," the expert stated.
