Russian Railways is transitioning part of its infrastructure to the Astra Linux platform. Already, 22,000 licenses for the distribution have been purchased—5,000 licenses will be used for migrating the automated workstations of employees, while the rest will be used to build a virtual infrastructure for workplaces. The migration to Astra Linux will begin this month. The implementation of Astra Linux into the infrastructure of Russian Railways will be handled by Grinatom JSC, the IT integrator of the State Corporation Rosatom, which was previously involved in developing IT services for Russian Railways.
It should be noted that the Astra Linux project is being developed by the Russian company RusBITech-Astra. The distribution is based on the Debian GNU/Linux package base and comes with its proprietary Fly desktop (interactive demonstration), which features components using the Qt library. A free edition, Astra Linux Common Edition, is available for non-commercial use. Access to repositories with binary builds and source texts of packages has been opened.
