The developers of the NoSQL database ScyllaDB have decided to stop releasing code under the AGPL and, starting from the new release in 2025, will switch to a proprietary open-source license (BSL).
It’s worth noting that ScyllaDB is a clone of the Cassandra database, rewritten in C++ (the original is in Java) and offers significantly higher performance. Currently, ScyllaDB has two licensing options: a fully open version under the AGPL and a proprietary version with advanced features for corporate users. From version 2025.1, expected in February next year, all development will focus on ScyllaDB Enterprise, which will be available for free use by the community.
The reasons cited for this decision include the reluctance to compete with their own product and the desire to focus on providing a quality product.
