German smartphone manufacturer Volla has introduced two mid-range rugged models — the Volla Phone Plinius and Volla Phone Plinius Plus. Both new models feature the same design and similar specifications. They differ in memory capacity, as well as the reinforced back cover and pogo pins present on the higher-end Plus model.
The smartphone bodies have an IP68 protection rating and are therefore waterproof. The devices are reportedly relatively shock-resistant and equipped with a high-quality tempered glass screen protective layer, as well as a replaceable back cover. The devices feature a 5300 mAh battery that can be replaced in just a few simple steps. Charging can be done either through a USB-C port at 30W or wirelessly at 15W. However, the modular and robust design makes the devices relatively thick (10.5 mm) and heavy (230 g).
The company proudly states that the devices are 'made in Germany.' However, Notebookcheck suggests that most of the smartphone components were likely imported.
The smartphones are equipped with 6.67-inch OLED displays with a resolution of 2400 × 1080 pixels, a refresh rate of 120Hz, and a brightness of 1000 cd/m². The fingerprint scanner is embedded in the display. The new models are powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 7300 processor, manufactured using a 4nm process (four Cortex-A78 cores clocked up to 2.4GHz and four Cortex-A55 cores clocked up to 2.0GHz). The chip is equipped with an integrated neural processing unit (NPU).
The smartphones feature a 64MP main camera with an f/1.79 lens and an 8MP ultra-wide camera with an f/2.2 lens. The front camera has a resolution of 32MP. For the camera systems, the manufacturer claims support for its own Volla AI algorithms to enhance image quality.
The Volla Phone Plinius and Volla Phone Plinius Plus smartphones are available for order from the manufacturer's official website. The Volla Phone Plinius version with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage is priced at €598, while the Volla Phone Plinius Plus model with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage, along with pogo pins (for connecting accessories) on a reinforced rear cover, is priced at €698. Deliveries for the Plus model are expected in June. The standard version is already available for purchase. Both smartphones are offered either with Volla OS based on Android or with Ubuntu Touch. The manufacturer supplies devices only to countries in Europe and the United Kingdom.
