As part of the System Transparency project and in partnership with Mullvad, the Supermicro X11SSH-TF server platform has been migrated to the coreboot system. This platform is the first modern server platform featuring the Intel Xeon E3-1200 v6 processor, also known as Kabylake-DT.
The following features have been implemented:
- ASPEED 2400 SuperI/O and BMC drivers have been added.
- BMC IPMI interface driver has been added.
- Boot functionality has been tested and measured.
- Support for AST2400 has been added in superiotool.
- Support for Intel Xeon E3-1200 has been added in inteltool.
- Support for TPM modules 1.2 and 2.0 has been added.
The source code is located in the coreboot project and is licensed under GPLv2.
Why is this important?
The development of closed-source firmware has been the de facto standard in the electronics industry since its inception. This has not changed, even as more open-source projects have emerged in other fields. Now, as the applications for firmware expand and stringent security requirements arise, it is crucial to develop them as open-source.
