Raymond Hill, the creator of the ad-blocking system uBlock Origin, has released a new version of the browser extension uMatrix 1.4.2, which provides features for blocking external resources similar to a firewall. This update was issued as an exception, despite the development of the extension having been halted last year. The creation of this new release does not indicate a resumption of development — after the publication of uMatrix 1.4.2, the repository has once again been archived.
The new release fixes a common vulnerability shared with uBlock Origin that could lead to crashes or memory exhaustion when navigating to specially crafted URLs. Additionally, the non-existent service hpHosts has been removed from the resource list, and the link to download the MVPS hosts list has been updated (http replaced with https).
