After four and a half years since the last release, Patrick Volkerding announced the start of alpha testing for the Slackware 16.0 distribution. The project has been developing since 1993 and is the oldest existing distribution. Its features include a lack of complexity and a simple initialization system, making Slackware an interesting solution for learning about Unix-like systems, conducting experiments, and getting acquainted with Linux. An installation image has been prepared for download, sized at 5.3 GB (x86_64), as well as a build (6.1 GB) for running in Live mode.
Notable changes include a rebuild of the package base using GCC 16.2, as well as updates to the Linux kernel 6.18.49, glibc 2.44, binutils 2.47, and other system components.
