Four and a half years after the last release, Patrick Volkerding announced the start of alpha testing for Slackware 16.0. The project has been in development since 1993 and is the oldest of the currently existing distributions. The distribution's distinctive features include a lack of complexity and a simple initialization system, making Slackware an interesting solution for learning how Unix-like systems work, experimenting, and getting acquainted with LinuxA 5.3 GB installation image (x86_64) is available for download, as well as a 6.1 GB build for running in Live mode.
Among the changes, we can note the rebuilding of the package database using GCC 16.2, as well as a kernel update Linux 6.18.49, glibc 2.44, binutils 2.47 and other system components.
