The next major update of the macOS operating system, named OSX Catalina, is set to be released in October 2019. After that, support for all 32-bit applications and games on Mac will be discontinued.
How game designer from Italy, Paolo Pedercini, stated on Twitter that OSX Catalina will essentially "kill" all 32-bit applications, and most games running on Unity 5.5 or an earlier version will no longer launch.
However, this was expected. During the announcement of macOS Mojave, Apple warned that this would be the last version of macOS to support 32-bit applications. The most interesting part is that Catalina will also block software created by unverified developers.
Specifically, users will be left without Bioshock Infinite, Borderlands, GTA: San Andreas, Portal, and many other projects. They will also lose several Adobe Systems applications. Notably, Electronic Arts has previously announced that it will discontinue support for The Sims 4 on older OS versions, although for compatibility, the company released Sims 4: Legacy Edition, which supports 64-bit systems.
Recall that Canonical previously attempted to eliminate 32-bit applications in the Ubuntu operating system. This immediately provoked outrage from users and the company Valve, which promised to leave the OS without Steam games. This had an impact — developers quickly reversed their decision and announced support for 32-bit applications until at least 2030. But in the case of Apple, it seems the outcome will be different.
