The Go community marks an important event: starting September 1, Austin Clements will become the new technical leader of the Go project, including the Go team at Google and the project as a whole. Russ Cox, who has led the project for over 12 years, announced this step, emphasizing that a leadership role is a service, not an honorary title.
Cox noted that leadership changes bring new energy and fresh perspectives, and that 12 years of stable leadership is sufficient. He cited the Python project, which, in his opinion, benefited from the fact that Guido van Rossum stepped down from leadership in 2018.Austin Clements, who has been working on Go since 2014 and previously led the work on the ‘core Go,’ will now become the technical leader of the entire project. Cherry Mui, who has been working on Go since 2016, will take over the leadership of the compiler, runtime, and releases instead of Austin.
Although Cox will step back from decision-making, he will remain an active participant in the project, continuing to share his expertise and support the team. His new focus will be on the projects Gaby and Oscar, aiming to improve developer productivity and open new avenues for other projects. Oscar is a project aimed at enhancing open-source software development through automation of source code support processes. Utilizing large language models (LLM) for analyzing and transforming text into code, Oscar focuses on routine tasks such as processing queries and matching them with documentation. The project has already shown successful results with the bot @gabyhelp in the Go task tracker.
Russ expressed pride in the achievements of the Go community, as well as full confidence in Austin and Cherry as the new leaders, Roland Shoemaker, who will continue to lead Go's security, and Rob Findley and Hana Kim, who will continue to lead Go tools and IDE support.
