Christian Hergert, the author of the GNOME Builder integrated development environment, the Ptyxis terminal emulator, and the GNOME Text Editor, announced that due to relocating from the USA to France and changing life priorities, he will no longer be able to devote appropriate attention to GNOME development. Christian was essentially the sole active maintainer of 16 GNOME modules and dedicated over forty hours a week to supporting and advancing the GNOME stack. It is noted that after the move, his ability to participate in development will be significantly limited, and he will focus primarily on his family, new activities, and settling into his new home.
The reason for the move is attributed to the new immigration policy in the USA (Chris's wife is originally from Tibet). Chris was employed at Red Hat, but the company declined his request to retain his position after relocating to France, despite providing evidence of the risks to his family.
Here is a list of modules that Chris was involved with and developed:
- GtkSourceView β a library for embedding a multi-line text editing widget into applications, used in many editors based on GTK.
- Text Editor β the main text editor for GNOME.
- Ptyxis β a terminal emulator, used by default in Fedora, Debian, Ubuntu, RHEL/CentOS/Alma/Rocky.
- libspelling β a library for spell checking in GTK applications based on the enchant2 package.

- jsonrpc-glib β a library for JSON-RPC communication.
- libpeas β a plugin engine for C, C++, Rust, Lua, Python, and JavaScript.
- libdex β a library for deferred task execution and integration with io_uring.
- GOM β mapping of GObject objects to SQLite.
- Manuals β a documentation viewer.
- Foundry β GNOME Builder's functionality implementation for command-line use and in library form.
- d-spy β a utility for analyzing D-Bus connections.
