The release of the proprietary Vivaldi 7.7 browser has taken place, developed on the Chromium engine by former developers of the Opera Presto engine. Vivaldi builds are prepared for Linux, Windows, and macOS. Changes made to the Chromium codebase are distributed under an open license. The browser interface is written in JavaScript using the React library, Node.js platform, Browserify, and various pre-existing NPM modules. The implementation of the interface is available in the source code but under a proprietary license.
The project aims to create a customizable and functional browser that maintains user data privacy. Key features include a tracker and ad blocker, note, history, and bookmark managers, private browsing mode, synchronization protected by end-to-end encryption, tab grouping mode, a sidebar, a configurator with numerous settings, horizontal tab display mode, and also in testing mode a built-in email client, RSS reader, and calendar.
The following improvements are presented in the new version:
- Access to all synchronized tabs, groups, and workspaces from other desktops with the Vivaldi browser installed has been provided.
- The Speed Dial has been updated, allowing users to merge bookmarks and widgets, gaining access to relevant information on the homepage.
- A new 'Performance' settings section has been added, where users can manage memory consumption while using the browser, as well as regulate power consumption when running on a laptop battery.
- The layout of the blocking statistics has changed. Now the user can more clearly see what is being blocked, and can also assess the scale of saved traffic and loading time.
- Email usability has been enhanced through visual separation of sections and new control elements.
- A new design for the 'About' page has been proposed, allowing for better navigation of browser data, as well as one-click copying of required elements.
