The release of the proprietary Vivaldi 7.8 browser has taken place. It is developed based on the Chromium engine by former developers of the Opera Presto engine. Vivaldi builds are prepared for Linux, Windows, and macOS. The changes made to the Chromium codebase are distributed under an open license. The browser interface is written in JavaScript using the React library, Node.js platform, Browserify, and various ready-made NPM modules. The implementation of the interface is available in the source code but under a proprietary license.
The project aims to create a customizable and functional browser that maintains user data privacy. Key features include a tracker and ad blocker, note, history, and bookmark managers, private browsing mode, synchronization protected by end-to-end encryption, tab grouping mode, a sidebar, a configurator with numerous settings, horizontal tab display mode, and also in testing mode a built-in email client, RSS reader, and calendar.
The following improvements are presented in the new version:
- The ability to arrange tabs in a mosaic layout by dragging has been added, allowing users to view any number of tabs simultaneously in one window.
- The context menu has been enhanced with an option to open a link directly in a new mosaic tab on the same screen as other tabs.
- Support for pinning a tab to the current domain has been added (when opening links in such a tab that lead to other domains, they will open in new tabs).
- The ability to display the pinned email tab in all windows and workspaces has been implemented.
- An option for a slideshow of background images from Unsplash has been added for the Speed Dial.
- A cursor preview option has been implemented, allowing navigation through page elements and text selection using the keyboard.
- A new installer for Windows has been proposed.
