Lennart Poettering, Christian Brauner, and Chris Kühl, who most recently worked at Microsoft, have announced the creation of a company called Amutable. The company is registered in Germany and mentions its mission as ensuring cryptographically verifiable integrity of Linux systems. Details are expected to be revealed at the FOSDEM conference. So far, it has only been mentioned that the technologies being developed by the company are related to verified Linux booting, ensuring build process integrity, and maintaining a trusted state during operation.
The company's CEO is Chris Kühl, the founder of the absorbed Microsoft company Kinvolk, which developed the Flatcar Container Linux distribution (a fork of CoreOS Container Linux) and open cloud-native solutions for Kubernetes. The CTO position has been taken by Christian Brauner, maintainer of the VFS subsystem in the Linux kernel, leader of the LXC and Incus projects (a fork of LXD), one of the maintainers of glibc, and a participant in systemd development. The Chief Engineer role has been filled by Lennart Poettering, creator of projects such as Avahi (implementation of the ZeroConf protocol), sound server PulseAudio, and the system manager systemd.
Seven engineers who have been involved in open projects such as systemd, the Linux kernel, Kubernetes, runc, LXC, Incus, and containerd have also joined the new company. They also have experience in building both traditional distributions (Debian, Fedora/CentOS, SUSE, Ubuntu) and atomically updated systems (Flatcar Container Linux, ParticleOS, Ubuntu Core).
