Forbes has published the results of evaluating the performance of computer games on Windows 11 Home and Fedora 40 with the default Linux kernel 6.10, drivers, and the Proton package from the distribution repositories. In both systems, the power management mode aimed at maximum performance was enabled. The experiment aimed to verify the claims that over the past few years, Linux's capabilities as a gaming platform have significantly improved, thanks to changes made to the kernel and graphics stack, many of which were prepared by employees of Valve and Red Hat.
Tests were conducted on a Framework 13 laptop with an AMD Ryzen 7 7840U CPU and a Radeon 780M GPU. In Linux, both native builds of games and Windows builds running through the Proton package were tested. In the games Shadow of the Tomb Raider (native build) and Cyberpunk 2077 (running through Proton), higher FPS was observed in Linux, while the performance of Total War: Warhammer III (native build) and Forza Horizon 5 (running through Proton) was better in Windows.
