The Linux Foundation has announced the launch of a new initiative aimed at promoting open artificial intelligence models
Last week, the Open Model Initiative (OMI) was officially presented, now operating under the auspices of The Linux Foundation. Together, they aim to stimulate innovation in the development of open AI models.
OMI was created by three organizations specializing in AI: Invoke, Comfy Org, and Civitai. The initiative focuses on developing and distributing AI models for generating images, videos, and audio, which will be available under open licenses.
Project management will be conducted by a committee consisting of community representatives. All models released under OMI will have licenses that remain unchanged, will not include terms for content removal, and will not require mandatory fees for access.
The main objectives of this program are:
- to create a governance structure and working groups to support collaborative efforts within the community;
- to conduct surveys among community members to understand their needs and expectations regarding future research and model training;
- to develop competitive and ethical AI models with open licenses;
- to establish standards to ensure model compatibility and a unified approach to metadata;
- to work with transparent datasets for training and to create automatic data tagging systems;
- to launch an alpha version of the model for targeted safety testing (Red Teaming);
- to publish the alpha version of the model and its configuration scenarios by the end of 2024.
Currently, OMI does not have an official website, but information about it can be found on the project page on GitHub or at the Discord server.
During the announcement, Jim Zemlin, the executive director of The Linux Foundation, stated:
"The Linux Foundation is deeply committed to the idea of open and collaborative AI development. With the launch of the Open Model Initiative, we are taking an important step towards making AI accessible and beneficial for everyone, creating conditions under which creativity and progress in AI can flourish without barriers."
Today, many companies and AI developers often succumb to the temptation of commercial gain, which leads to restricted access to models. An open model that anyone could use yesterday might be behind a paywall tomorrow.
