Quietly released Tribler 8.0.6 — A BitTorrent client with open source (GPLv3), developed by Delft University of Technology (Netherlands).
The main feature of Tribler is the built-in download anonymization system that uses its own TOR-like network.
This release includes a ton of long-awaited changes:
- Fully the dependency on Qt has been removed, now replaced by a Web interface.
- The anonymization engine has been rewritten in Rust, download speeds have increased by 2–3 times.
- Dark/light themes with auto-switching.
- The outdated 'channels' system has been removed, now replaced by a search for popular torrents.
- The code has been almost completely rewritten, the codebase has decreased several times, and unit tests now pass in seconds instead of minutes.
There were also regressions: for example, due to the transition to the new UI, instead of a file tree, there is now a flat list.
Overall, the preparation of this release took almost a year: there were 6 test pre-releases (hence the 8.0.6).
