On March 5, the company iXsystems announced the merging of the codebases of its two projects FreeNAS and TrueNAS under the common name — TrueNAS Open Storage.
FreeNAS — a free operating system for building network storage. FreeNAS is based on the OS FreeBSD. Its main feature is the integrated support for ZFS, the ability to manage the system via a web interface written in Python using the Django framework. For network storage access, protocols can be used FTP, NFS, Samba, AFP, rsync, and iSCSI, with built-in support for LDAP/Active Directory, and to enhance reliability, a software RAID array of level 0, 1, or 5 can be configured..
Initially, the company released two versions of the distribution:
- FreeNAS — a free distribution
- TrueNAS — a FreeNAS-based distribution for commercial use. It was supplied with the storage systems manufactured by the company.

- TrueNAS CORE — the free open-source version
- TrueNAS Enterprise — the enterprise version.
The merging of the distributions will accelerate the development cycle, simplify testing and improve overall reliability, as well as speed up the transition to OpenZFS 2.0 based on 'ZFS on Linux.'
