Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, the anticipated LTS release of the operating system from Canonical, promises to deliver a range of performance optimizations for the GNOME desktop environment. The new improvements aim to enhance efficiency and usability, especially for users with multiple monitors and those utilizing Wayland sessions.
In addition to the GNOME triple buffering patches, which are not yet included in the main branch of Mutter, Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and Debian plan to implement further performance optimizations. Daniel van Vugt from Canonical continues to work on triple buffering and recently presented a minor redesign of the code.
One of the patches proposed for the Mutter package in Debian focuses on leveraging graphics cards for additional monitors connected to extra graphics cards in Wayland sessions. Previously, this required the use of primary graphics cards, which could lead to performance degradation. The patch addresses a performance issue noted in Ubuntu 22.04 LTS in April 2022.
A patch for the KMS CRTC code has also been introduced, fixing issues with mouse cursor 'stuttering' in Mutter 45 due to KMS stream optimizations.
