Fifteen years ago, on October 20, 2004, the first version of the Linux distribution Ubuntu — 4.10 'Warty Warthog' — was released. The project was founded by Mark Shuttleworth, a millionaire from South Africa, who was involved in the development of Debian Linux and inspired by the idea of creating a user-friendly desktop distribution with a predictable fixed development cycle. Several developers from the Debian project were involved, many of whom still contribute to the development of both projects.
The live build of Ubuntu 4.10 is still available for and allows you to see what the system looked like 15 years ago. The release included
GNOME 2.8, XFree86 4.3, Firefox 0.9, OpenOffice.org 1.1.2.
