The technical committee responsible for Ubuntu releases has decided to exclude Ubuntu MATE and Ubuntu Unity from the editions of Ubuntu 26.04 that will receive long-term support (LTS). In the spring release 26.04, the additional editions that will receive LTS status are Ubuntu Budgie, Ubuntu Kylin, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Edubuntu, Ubuntu Studio, and Ubuntu Cinnamon (Kubuntu is not listed, but it is likely that it was simply forgotten).
Ubuntu Unity has been left without developers and missed the autumn release 25.10. Ubuntu MATE is still on the MATE 1.26 branch formed in 2021, has unresolved issues, and is facing a lack of developers. Development of the MATE environment has been stagnant since last spring.
