Starting March 1, the Ubuntu project will use Matrix as its official communication platform for developers. The previously used IRC communication channels have been classified as obsolete. In a vote among developers working at Canonical, 10 participants were in favor of switching to Matrix, 1 was against it, and 6 requested a public discussion. A discussion about the feasibility of migrating to Matrix was held on the ubuntu-devel mailing list, after which the Technical Committee (Ubuntu Technical Board) made the decision to migrate.
Official communication, such as real-time requests to privileged Ubuntu developer teams, will now only take place through Matrix. Canonical employees involved in Ubuntu development will be required to be present on this platform during working hours. The IRC channel ‘#ubuntu-devel’ will be replaced by the matrix room ‘#devel:ubuntu.com’, while ‘#ubuntu-release’ will be replaced by ‘#release:ubuntu.com’.
