On May 14, a French non-profit organization Framasoft, which recently introduced a federated video hosting project PeerTube, began fundraising for a new initiative — Mobilizon, a free and federated alternative to Facebook Events and MeetUp, servers for creating scheduled meetings and events.
A total of three funding levels were proposed with the following goals:
- €20,000:
- a tool for organizing events;
- work on graphic design and UX;
- open and documented code.
- €35,000:
- support for the federation and ActivityPub;
- administration tools;
- a launched copy of the server for testing;
- €50,000 and above:
- an improved interface;
- a smartphone app;
- additional functionality.
As of today, the campaign has been successfully completed, and Framasoft has over €50,000 in donations, which, however, does not mean it is over — the developers are requesting continued funding in the remaining days to cover unforeseen expenses.
The source code for the server and ActivityPub support is directly borrowed from Pleroma.
The first public beta is scheduled for the end of this fall, and the first stable version is planned for 2020.
