The National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) in Japan has long been engaged in improving communication systems, consistently setting records. In 2015, Japanese scientists first achieved data transmission speeds of 1 Pbit/s. It took four years to move from the creation of the first prototype to testing a fully functional system with all necessary components, but mass adoption of this technology is still a way off. Nevertheless, NICT continues to make progress—recently announcing a new speed record for fiber optics. This time, researchers from the Extremely Advanced Optical Transmission Technologies group managed to exceed the mark of 10 Pbit/s for a single fiber optic line.
