The developers of the AlmaLinux distribution announced their decision to activate the CodeReady Builder (CRB) package repository by default with the publication of an update for the almalinux-repos package for AlmaLinux OS 10.0 tomorrow. In AlmaLinux OS Kitten 10, based on CentOS Stream 10, this repository has already been included since the end of August. For those who do not want to enable CRB, the command 'dnf config-manager --disable crb' can be used.
The CRB repository provides a selection of packages that are not offered by default in Red Hat Enterprise Linux, such as development applications, additional libraries and bindings, as well as packages containing debugging information, documentation, header files, static builds, and code examples (packages like '-devel', '-example', '-doc', and '-static'). Among other things, CRB includes libraries used as dependencies in packages from the EPEL (Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux) repository.
Since CRB was not enabled by default, the installation of certain packages from EPEL led to error messages. This behavior confused users who had to search for information indicating that the issue could be resolved by enabling CRB, resulting in a large number of bug reports being sent to EPEL maintainers. For example, such errors occurred when installing the plasma-discover package for the KDE Plasma desktop, as it depended on the appstream-qt package available in CRB. Additionally, in AlmaLinux 10.1, the selinux-policy-extra package will be added to CRB, which is necessary for the correct operation of EPEL programs with SELinux.
