Google has implemented in the Google Play services update 25.14 the ability for automatic rebooting of smartphones after 3 days of inactivity (when the screen is not unlocked). To activate this feature, a corresponding option will be added to the settings. The Google Play services update 25.14 will be rolled out to users next week.
Previously, the automatic reboot function was implemented in the Android platform GrapheneOS. The reboot is used to reset decrypted partitions containing user data back to their original encrypted state. After rebooting the device, user profile data remains encrypted and is decrypted only after the user enters their login password. It is assumed that in the event of the device falling into other hands, the automatic reboot will protect against memory content analysis attacks and exploitation of vulnerabilities that allow bypassing the screen lock.
Additionally, it is worth mentioning the cessation of the publication of patches addressing vulnerabilities for the Android 12 platform, released in 2021. The April report on resolved vulnerabilities mentions only releases of Android 13, 14, and 15.
Moreover, there is an increase in system requirements — starting with the release of Android 15, the minimum possible size for Flash memory has increased from 16 to 32 GB, of which 75% must be allocated for the data partition. To ship Android 15, the hardware of the smartphone must also support the Vulkan 1.3 graphics API. If these requirements are not met, the manufacturer of the Android device will not be able to pass Google's certification for using Android 15.
