The logic of the proposed functionality is similar to that in Btrfs: if a read operation encounters an input/output error or a checksum mismatch is computed, the problematic data block will be automatically rewritten if redundancy for its recovery is available.
Linus Torvalds postponed the acceptance of the change into kernel 6.11 due to issues with the patch formatting (a 'git rebase' was performed on a new branch, which was unnecessary) and the existence of unanswered questions regarding the changes introduced by the patches outside of fs/bcachefs.
