The developers of the GNU/Hurd project presented a report on recent achievements and the current state of the project. Among the recent achievements of GNU/Hurd:
- In the Debian GNU/Hurd distribution, 75% of packages from the Debian archive can now be built (this figure was 58% in 2023).
- A port for the x86_64 architecture has been stabilized, enabling the creation of Debian packages for x86_64 systems, and porting to ARM64 systems has begun.
- Initial support for SMP (Symmetric Multiprocessing) has been added.
- Driver support in user space has been improved by utilizing the rump (Runnable Userspace Meta Program) mechanism developed by the NetBSD project.
- User space drivers for SATA/USB disks and network adapters have been prepared.
- User space stacks for USB and TCP/IP have been implemented.
- Building of packages with Xfce, GNOME, KDE, llvm in Debian GNU/Hurd has been ensured.
- Support for the Go, Rust, OCaml, GHC, and Java languages has been added.
- A Guix/Hurd distribution has been created, allowing the use of the GNU Hurd kernel (x86_64-gnu) instead of the Linux kernel.
- Projects have been initiated to create variants of the Arch and Alpine distributions with the GNU Hurd kernel.
GNU Hurd is a kernel developed as a replacement for the Unix kernel and structured as a set of servers, operating on top of the GNU Mach microkernel and implementing various system services such as file systems, network stacks, and file access management systems. The GNU Mach microkernel provides an IPC mechanism used to organize interaction among components of GNU Hurd and to build a distributed multi-server architecture. The Debian GNU/Hurd distribution combines the Debian software environment with the GNU/Hurd kernel and remains the only actively developed Debian platform built on a kernel different from Linux (the Debian GNU/KFreeBSD port was previously developed but has long been abandoned).
