The PanVK driver has added support for Vulkan 1.1. The Panfrost OpenGL driver has been improved.

Collabora has announced the implementation of Vulkan 1.1 support in the PanVK driver (previously only version 1.0 was supported). The driver provides support for the Vulkan graphics API on ARM GPU devices based on the V10 architecture, such as Mali-G610 and Mali-G310. In addition to compatibility with the Vulkan 1.1 API, many extensions from newer versions of Vulkan have been added to the PanVK code, but full compatibility with Vulkan 1.2 has not yet been achieved. The following extensions have been implemented:

  • VK_KHR_8bit_storage
  • VK_KHR_dedicated_allocation
  • VK_KHR_global_priority
  • VK_KHR_index_type_uint8
  • VK_KHR_map_memory2
  • VK_KHR_multiview (v10+)
  • VK_KHR_shader_draw_parameters
  • VK_KHR_shader_float16_int8
  • VK_KHR_shader_non_semantic_info
  • VK_KHR_shader_relaxed_extended_instruction
  • VK_KHR_shader_subgroup_rotate (v10+)
  • VK_KHR_vertex_attribute_divisor
  • VK_KHR_zero_initialize_workgroup_memory
  • VK_EXT_4444_formats
  • VK_EXT_global_priority_query
  • VK_EXT_global_priority
  • VK_EXT_host_query_reset
  • VK_EXT_image_robustness
  • VK_EXT_pipeline_robustness
  • VK_EXT_provoking_vertex
  • VK_EXT_queue_family_foreign
  • VK_EXT_sampler_filter_minmax (v10+)
  • VK_EXT_scalar_block_layout
  • VK_EXT_subgroup_size_control (v10+)
  • VK_EXT_tooling_info

Support for Vulkan 1.1 in PanVK has already been accepted into the branch on which Mesa 25.0 is being developed. Additionally, PanVK has been included in the list of drivers available for use in Mesa by default (previously, PanVK was not displayed in the driver list and required the environment variable to be set for its use). In ARM systems, the PanVK build is enabled by default. Code for supporting individual Vulkan 1.2 extensions has been transferred for inclusion in the main Mesa distribution.

Additionally, the functionality of the open-source OpenGL driver Panfrost, being developed for ARM Mali GPUs alongside the Vulkan driver PanVK, has been expanded:

  • To improve bandwidth efficiency, the driver has by default included a 'transaction elimination' mechanism, discarding redundant operations (for example, operations that do not change fragment overwrite since the last render are discarded).
  • Support for incremental rendering has been added, allowing for reduced memory consumption when rendering a large number of objects through separate processing of fragments (tile).
  • Support for AFBC mode 32×8 has been added, applied for optimizing operations with the scan-out buffer in some display controllers.
  • The maximum supported width and height of textures has been increased from 8192 to 32768 pixels.
  • Support has been added for the MTK_FMT_MOD_TILE_16L32S texturing mode, where fragmented data is copied to a temporary unfragmented buffer before rendering (used for working with hardware video decoders present in MediaTek SoCs).
