Mozilla has introduced several upcoming changes set to be activated in Firefox version 149, scheduled for March 24. The most significant innovation will be the integration of the free Firefox VPN service (not to be confused with Mozilla VPN), allowing users to access sites indirectly through intermediary proxy servers in different countries, thus concealing the user's IP address. Initially, the VPN service will be available to users in the USA, France, Germany, and the UK. VPN-the service will be limited to 50 gigabytes of traffic per month.
The second significant innovation will be the default inclusion of the Split View mode in Firefox 149, allowing users to view content from two tabs side by side in one window. This mode is activated via the 'Add Split View' button in the context menu displayed when right-clicking on tabs. Clicking this button divides the window into two parts, with the content of the new tab page opening in the right section. If an option is selected for a group of two tabs, the specified tabs will open side by side immediately. The size of the left and right viewing areas can be arbitrarily resized by dragging the divider with the mouse. The active tab during simultaneous viewing is highlighted with a red border.
Other changes include:
- A new project mascot has been introduced — a fox named Kit, whose image will appear in the browser in various dialogs and notifications.
- Firefox 149 will include the Tab Notes feature for attaching arbitrary notes to tabs. The button for adding notes is placed in the context menu and is also shown on the thumbnail that appears when hovering over a tab.
- The built-in AI chatbot Window has been revised and renamed to Smart Window.
- A section with an operation history has been added to the developer tools (enabled via devtools.application.sessionHistory.enabled in about:config).
- The Performance Tools now support a dark mode design.
- In the nightly builds, testing of the revamped configuration interface will begin in April, featuring simplified navigation and improved search functionality.
