In Firefox 94, output for X11 will default to using EGL.

In the nightly builds that will form the basis for the Firefox 94 release, a change has been added that includes a new rendering backend for graphical environments using the X11 protocol by default. This new backend is notable for using EGL for rendering the graphical interface instead of GLX. The backend supports operation with open-source OpenGL drivers Mesa 21.x and with proprietary NVIDIA drivers 470.x. Proprietary OpenGL drivers from AMD are not yet supported.

The adoption of EGL addresses issues with gfx drivers and expands the range of devices available for video acceleration and WebGL. Previously, activating the new X11 backend required launching with the environment variable MOZ_X11_EGL, after which WebRender and OpenGL compositing components switched to using EGL. The new backend has been prepared by splitting the DMABUF backend, originally created for Wayland, which allows direct output of frames to GPU memory that can be reflected in the EGL framebuffer and rendered as a texture when compositing web page elements.
