The codebase that will be used in the release of GNOME 49 has been updated to disable the X11 session by default in the GDM (GNOME Display Manager), which provides the login screen. When building GDM, the option "-Dx11-support=false" is set, which by default disables the compilation of components for X11 support. Work is underway to allow the GNOME Settings configurator to be built without X11 support. A year from now, in the GNOME 50 release, the code for working with X11 sessions is intended to be completely removed from GNOME.
The Wayland protocol session has been the default in GNOME since 2016, while the X11 session has been tested less and less effectively over time, with unresolved bugs related to X11. The cessation of support for the X11 session will reduce maintenance effort and free up resources that can be directed towards improving the quality of the modern graphics stack.
Additionally, the FESCo (Fedora Engineering Steering Committee), which is responsible for the technical development of the Fedora distribution, has approved a proposal to remove from the project's repositories the packages used to run GNOME on top of the X-server. All GNOME users who used X11 will be forced to switch to the Wayland-based GNOME session. This change will take effect in the autumn release of Fedora 43. The delivery of the X.org Server and related components has also been discontinued in the current release of the RHEL 10 distribution. The ability to run X11 applications using XWayland in Fedora and RHEL remains unchanged.
