The Google Play Store digital content store is divided into several sections, one of which is Play Movies & TV (movies and TV shows). While many video services offer customers a subscription, the Play Store allows for the purchase of individual films or shows for later viewing. Now, however, online sources are reporting that hundreds of free movies may soon appear in the Play Store.

Virtually all content currently available in Play Movies & TV is paid. The exception is materials distributed as part of short-term promotions. However, this situation may soon change. According to online reports, users of the service will soon be able to access hundreds of free movies, during which advertisements will be streamed to the viewers.
References to this were found by researchers in the code of the Google Play Movies app version 4.18.37. In particular, one line of code refers to ‘hundreds of movies with just a few ads.’ This suggests that a large part of the service's library may become available in a new format. It remains unclear whether this change will apply to all movies available in Play Movies & TV, or just to selected ones. Nonetheless, this change could radically alter the service's operation, making it more viable.
At present, it is unknown when Google may introduce the change. Most likely, this will occur alongside one of the upcoming client updates of the service.
