Amid ongoing mass unrest in Iraq, attempt has been made to completely block access to the internet. Currently, with about 75% of Iraqi providers, including all major telecommunications operators. Access remains only in some cities in northern Iraq (for example, in the Kurdish autonomous region), which have separate network infrastructure and an autonomous status.
Initially, authorities tried to block access to Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Instagram, and other messengers and social networks, but after that step proved ineffective, they moved to a complete block of access to disrupt coordination among protestors. Notably, this is not the first internet shutdown in Iraq; for example, in July 2018, amid protest movements, access to the internet was completely in Baghdad, and in June of this year, at the decision of the Council of Ministers, internet access was partially to... prevent fraud during national school exams.
